Lines and order of symmetry
For each shape, write down the number of lines of symmetry and the order of rotational symmetry.
(a) Square (b) Rectangle (not a square) (c) Equilateral triangle (d) Parallelogram (not a rectangle or rhombus)
- 1
(a) A square has two diagonals and two lines through opposite edge midpoints, and maps onto itself every .
- 2
(b) A rectangle has only the two lines through opposite edge midpoints — its diagonals are not lines of symmetry.
- 3
(c) An equilateral triangle has one line per vertex.
- 4
(d) A parallelogram has no line of symmetry at all, but a half-turn maps it onto itself.
Answer
(a) , (b) , (c) , (d) ,
Examiner tip
The parallelogram is the one to remember: rotational symmetry without any line symmetry. The March 2026 examiner report found that "Most candidates indicated that a parallelogram had 1, 2 or 4 lines of symmetry rather than 0." Another common error is claiming the diagonals of a rectangle are lines of symmetry — fold along one and the halves do not match.
