Examiner tip
The equation must equal zero before you factorise — that is what makes the 'one bracket is zero' argument valid. Use the method the question asks for: when a question said solve by factorisation, the June 2025 examiner report noted that answers found with the quadratic formula instead "gained 1 mark only if the correct x values were found." Both roots are required.
