Second stage depends on the first
A box is chosen at random. Box is chosen with probability , and box with probability .
Box contains red and blue counters. Box contains red and blue counters.
One counter is then taken at random from the chosen box.
Find the probability that the counter is red.
- 1
Work out the second-stage probabilities. In box there are reds out of counters.
- 2
In box there is red out of .
- 3
Red can be reached by two different routes through the tree. Multiply along the first branch.
- 4
Multiply along the second branch.
- 5
Add the two routes, because either one produces a red counter.
Answer
Examiner tip
Multiply along branches and add between them. Note the two red branches have different probabilities and because the boxes have different contents — this is what makes the stages dependent. Keep both products visible in your working. On a total-probability question the June 2025 examiner report observed that "Where correct answers were seen, in many cases a tree diagram had also been drawn to support the method."
