Stationary points and their nature
A curve has equation .
Find the coordinates of the two stationary points and determine the nature of each.
- 1
Differentiate term by term: multiply by the power, then reduce the power by one. The constant differentiates to .
- 2
Stationary points occur where the gradient is zero. Set the derivative to .
- 3
Divide through by first — it makes the factorising much easier.
- 4
So or . Substitute each back into the original equation for .
- 5
And for .
- 6
To classify them, differentiate again. A negative second derivative means a maximum, positive means a minimum.
- 7
Test each stationary point.
Answer
is a maximum; is a minimum
Examiner tip
Substitute back into the original equation, not the derivative — putting into just gives again. The June 2025 examiner report found that "Most errors were arithmetic, especially when calculating the y-values corresponding to correct x-values", so check each substitution twice. The question also says determine the nature: a classification is required, and the June 2025 report noted candidates "not appreciating the difference between the local minimum and maximum points on the curve."
