Cheapest International Schools in Tokyo 2026

Not every expat family in Tokyo can access — or wants — the JPY 3M–4.5M/year tier of international education. A range of more affordable options exist, from community schools serving specific national groups to smaller independent international schools offering quality education at significantly lower fees.

Community Schools: The Most Affordable Option

Tokyo hosts well-established community schools serving specific national groups. These schools teach in the national language of their community and follow their home country’s curriculum. They are typically not English-medium and are most suitable for families from that specific national group.

Tokyo Korean School and Tokyo Chinese School charge fees well under JPY 1M/year, making them the most affordable formal schooling options in the city. However, they are language-specific — instruction is in Korean and Mandarin respectively.

Deutsche Schule Tokyo (German School Tokyo) follows the German curriculum and teaches primarily in German. It is well-regarded and costs approximately JPY 800,000–1,400,000/year — significantly less than English-medium international schools.

Lycée Franco-Japonais de Tokyo (the French School) follows the French national curriculum and teaches in French. Fees are approximately JPY 700,000–1,200,000/year — one of the more affordable options for French-speaking families.

Nishimachi International School

Nishimachi International School is one of Tokyo’s most distinctive institutions — a genuinely bilingual school (English and Japanese) following an American framework. Located in Minato ward, Nishimachi educates students from Early Childhood through Grade 9.

The school’s bilingual Japanese-English curriculum is unique among Tokyo international schools, and its small size — around 440 students — creates a close-knit community. It is particularly popular with Japanese-American families and those who want their children to develop native-level Japanese.

Annual fees are approximately JPY 1.5M–2.2M — considerably less than ASIJ or BST.

Christian Academy in Japan (CAJ)

The Christian Academy in Japan, located in Higashi Kurume (western Tokyo suburbs), serves the missionary and Christian expat community. It offers an American curriculum within a Christian framework and is accredited by WASC.

CAJ’s suburban location means property costs are lower than central Tokyo schools, and fees reflect this — approximately JPY 1.2M–1.8M/year. The community is close-knit and the school has a strong reputation within the missionary community in Japan.

Government-Assisted and International Section Schools

Japan’s public school system does not typically serve non-Japanese-speaking international students well. However, some international families choose to enrol children in Japanese public schools with additional private English tutoring — particularly for short-term assignments. This is the lowest-cost option but requires children to attend in Japanese, which can be challenging without prior Japanese language skills.

Some municipalities in the Tokyo area operate “International Classes” within Japanese public schools, offering limited Japanese language support for foreign children — these are free but not English-medium international education.

Tips for Reducing International School Costs in Tokyo

Company school allowance. Many multinational employers with Tokyo offices include international school allowances in expat packages — commonly USD 20,000–40,000/year. Negotiate this before accepting a relocation.

Consider the suburbs. Schools further from central Tokyo (like Christian Academy in Japan in Higashi Kurume) charge lower fees than equivalent schools in Minato or Shibuya.

University-linked schools. Some Tokyo universities operate affiliated international sections at lower than market fees for researchers and faculty families — worth asking about if you are affiliated with an institution.

Scholarship enquiry. Even smaller Tokyo international schools sometimes offer limited merit or need-based bursaries.

What “Affordable” Means in the Tokyo Context

Tokyo is one of the world’s most expensive cities. Even the “budget” international schools charge JPY 1M–2M/year — equivalent to USD 7,000–13,000 — which is above the cost of international education in many other Asian cities.

The community and national schools (Korean, Chinese, German, French) are genuinely affordable alternatives, but only for families whose children speak the relevant language.
