Evaluate vs Assess vs Discuss: AQA GCSE Command Words for Extended Writing
Extended-writing command words at AQA GCSE
Evaluate, Assess and Discuss are higher-order command words used for longer responses. These questions often use levels-based marking—examiners judge overall quality. Many students lose marks by giving one-sided answers, stating facts without judging, or failing to support views with evidence.
Evaluate
AQA (Science): Use the information supplied, as well as your knowledge and understanding, to consider evidence for and against when making a judgement.
Weigh up different aspects, make a judgement, and back it up with evidence. You must reach a conclusion.
Structure: Consider different aspects → Use evidence → Make clear judgement → Support conclusion.
Assess
AQA (A-level/GCSE): Consider relative merits of various arguments and weigh them up to make an informed judgement.
Select the most important factors, weigh them up, and come to a reasoned conclusion. Similar to Evaluate.
Structure: Identify key factors → Prioritise → Consider different angles → Reach conclusion with justification.
Discuss
AQA: Present both sides of an argument and come to a conclusion. The National Literacy Trust notes that Discuss requires modal verbs to show alternative arguments (e.g. “could”, “might”, “may”).
Explore different sides of an issue, consider different viewpoints, and end with a conclusion.
Structure: Introduce issue → Explore different aspects → Use evidence → Reach conclusion.
Levels-based marking
For these command words, examiners use levels or bands:
- Top level: Balanced argument, clear conclusion, strong use of evidence
- Middle level: Some balance, conclusion present but less developed
- Lower level: One-sided, vague, or no conclusion
Tips: Match depth to marks; plan before writing; end with a clear conclusion.
