Relative atomic mass and the carbon-12 standard
The diagram shows that one atom of magnesium-24 balances two atoms of carbon-12.
(a) Name the atom that relative masses are compared with, and state the fraction of its mass that is used. [2]
(b) Describe what is meant by the relative atomic mass, , of an element. [1]
(c) Chlorine has two isotopes, chlorine-35 and chlorine-37. Suggest why the relative atomic mass of chlorine, 35.5, is not a whole number. [1]

(a) The standard is an atom of carbon-12, . Relative masses compare with of the mass of one carbon-12 atom. On this scale a magnesium-24 atom has relative mass , which is why it balances two carbon-12 atoms.
- 2
(b) is the average mass of the isotopes of an element compared to of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
- 3
(c) is an average that takes account of how common each isotope is. A mixture of atoms of mass 35 and 37 has an average between the two — here closer to 35, because chlorine-35 is more abundant.
Answer
(a) Carbon-12; one-twelfth () of its mass. (b) The average mass of the isotopes of the element compared with of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. (c) It is a weighted average of the masses of the isotopes, 35 and 37, according to their abundances.
Examiner tip
Name the isotope exactly. When asked for the reference standard, the June 2025 examiner report noted that "Many candidates had the idea that carbon was required but chose 14C or just 'carbon'." Write carbon-12.
