General formula, names and formulae of carboxylic acids
Carboxylic acids form a homologous series.
(a) State the general formula of the carboxylic acids.
(b) Compound P is . Name compound P and give its molecular formula.
(c) Give the empirical formula of ethanoic acid.
(d) Explain why the molecular formula and the empirical formula of propanoic acid are the same.
- 1
(a) Every carboxylic acid has one group joined to an alkyl group. The alkyl group has the formula , so the general formula is (for methanoic acid, ).
- 2
(b) Count the carbon atoms in the longest chain, including the carbon of the group: , , , gives four. A four-carbon acid is butanoic acid.
- 3
Add up every atom of each element: C ; H ; O . The molecular formula is written with each element once.
- 4
(c) Ethanoic acid, , has the molecular formula . Divide every number by the highest common factor, , to get the simplest whole-number ratio.
- 5
(d) Propanoic acid is . The numbers , and have no common factor other than , so the ratio cannot be simplified and the empirical formula is also .
Answer
(a) (b) butanoic acid; (c) (d) has no common factor, so the atom ratio is already the simplest whole-number ratio.
Examiner tip
On the general formula, the March 2026 examiner report noted that "Some candidates did not use correct subscripts and others wrote RCOOH." Write with the subscripts clearly lowered. When an empirical formula was asked for in the same paper, "Many candidates gave the molecular formula." — always check whether the numbers can be divided by a common factor.
