Which IGCSE and International A-level Subjects Do You Need for Medicine?
Why this topic matters
Parents and students often underestimate how much IGCSE and A-level subject choices can expand or limit future options for Medicine (including UK and other competitive routes). Universities look first at which subjects you have taken, and only then at the grades. Getting this wrong can close doors even for very capable students.
Recommended IGCSE subjects
Essential IGCSE subjects
- Separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics (triple science if available; otherwise the highest level of Co-ordinated Science).
- Mathematics (Extended) with a strong grade.
- Strong English Language (First or Second Language) for personal statements and interviews.
Strong additional IGCSE subjects
- Additional Mathematics for students likely to take A-level Maths.
- At least one essay-based subject such as History or Geography.
Recommended International A-level subjects
Core / required A-levels
- Chemistry A-level – effectively mandatory for most medical schools.
- At least one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics – safest choice is Biology.
Strong A-level combinations
- Typical strong trio: Chemistry + Biology + Mathematics or Chemistry + Biology + Physics.
- Avoid having more than one ‘soft’ subject; keep at least two hard sciences/Maths.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Some schools accept Chemistry + one other science/Maths, but Chemistry + Biology keeps the widest range of options.
- Triple-science at IGCSE plus high Chem/Bio/Maths A-levels is the standard profile at selective programmes.
