A report writing sample shows you the exact format and structure of a report for IGCSE English and Singapore secondary exams. Using a report writing sample helps you see where the title, by line, date, introduction, body sections, and conclusion go, and what kind of language and detail to use. This guide gives a full report writing sample and explains how to use it when practising report writing for your exams.

Why a report writing sample matters

In IGCSE and Singapore exams, report writing is marked on format as well as content. If you miss the title, by line, date, or signature and designation, you lose marks even if the body is good. A report writing sample acts as a template: you see the correct order of elements and the formal, past-tense style. Practise by adapting the sample to different questions (school events, trips, surveys) so you can produce a full, well-structured report under timed conditions.

Report writing sample: school event

Report on the Annual Science Exhibition
By Lee Ming Wei, Science Club Secretary
20 February 2026

Introduction – This report describes the Annual Science Exhibition held in the school hall on 15 February 2026. The event aimed to showcase student projects and encourage interest in science.

Preparation – The Science Club began planning in January. Twelve teams from Years 8 to 11 submitted projects. The hall was set up with display boards. Teachers and senior students acted as judges.

The event – The exhibition opened at 9 a.m. and closed at 2 p.m. Over 200 students and 50 parents visited. Projects covered topics such as renewable energy and chemical reactions. The winning team from Year 10 presented a model of a solar-powered water filter.

Conclusion – The exhibition was successful. I recommend holding it every year.

How to use this report writing sample

Use this report writing sample as your model. When you get a report question, follow the same structure: title, by line, date, introduction (what, when, where, why), body with subheadings (one theme per section), and conclusion (summary and optional recommendation). Include all the bullet points from the question and use formal language and past tense.
