A report writing example shows you how to write a report for IGCSE English and Singapore secondary exams. This guide gives a report writing example (and links to more report writing examples and samples) so you can see the correct format and tone.

What a good report writing example shows

A good report writing example has a title, by line, date, introduction (what, when, where, why), body with clear sections and subheadings (e.g. Preparation, Activities), and a conclusion with optional recommendation. The language is formal and past tense. Use a report writing example as a template: copy the structure and replace the content with the points from your question.

Report writing example: school trip

Report on the Year 10 Geography Field Trip
By Sarah Lim, Class Representative
20 February 2026

Introduction – This report describes the Geography field trip to the reservoir on 12 February 2026. The aim was to collect data for the coursework and observe water quality and land use.

Activities – Students worked in groups and used equipment provided by the school. They recorded observations and took photographs. The teacher supervised and answered questions. The trip lasted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Conclusion – The trip was useful for coursework. I recommend similar trips for future years.

What makes this a good report writing example

This report writing example has the correct format: title, by line, date, introduction (what, when, where, why), body with subheadings (Activities), and conclusion with a recommendation. The language is formal and in the past tense. The content is specific (times, numbers, details) rather than vague. When you write your own report, use this report writing example as a template and adapt the content to the question. Examiners mark both format and content, so a well-structured report with all the required points scores highly.
