Most Expensive International Schools in Stockholm 2026

Stockholm is Scandinavia’s largest city and one of Europe’s most liveable capitals. It hosts a significant international community — driven by major multinational corporations (Spotify, Klarna, H&M, Ericsson), diplomatic missions and international organisations. The city’s international school market serves a demanding expat clientele with high expectations for academic quality.

Stockholm International School (SIS)

Stockholm International School is the city’s flagship English-medium international school, offering the full IB continuum from PYP through to the Diploma Programme. Founded in 1951, SIS serves a genuinely international community (50+ nationalities) and is the natural first choice for English-speaking expat families arriving in Stockholm.

Annual fees are approximately SEK 165,000–220,000 (~$15,000–$20,500) — among the highest in Scandinavia. The school’s central location, strong IB results and established international community justify the premium for many families.

International School of Stockholm

A smaller alternative to SIS, offering IB and British curriculum pathways. Annual fees are approximately SEK 150,000–200,000 (~$14,000–$18,700). Popular with families who want a more intimate school environment than SIS.

What Drives High Fees in Stockholm?

High cost of living. Stockholm is one of Europe’s most expensive cities. Teacher housing allowances, salary packages and facilities costs are all higher than in comparable European cities.

Limited supply. The English-medium international school market in Stockholm is small — essentially SIS and a handful of smaller schools. Limited competition means less price pressure.

Swedish tax environment. Operating costs in Sweden are higher than in many other countries due to employment taxes and regulations.

Despite the relatively high fees, Stockholm international school costs are generally lower than equivalent schools in London, Zurich or Singapore.

Affordable Alternatives in Stockholm

Swedish state schools are free for residents and deliver high-quality education in Swedish. For families planning a longer stay with children who will learn Swedish quickly, integration into the Swedish system is a viable and excellent option.

Engelska Skolan (free schools operating in English and Swedish) offers a strong bilingual education at very low or no cost for families with Swedish residency, making Stockholm one of the more accessible cities for cost-conscious international families.
