International School Fees China: Budget to Premium

China (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities) has a large number of international schools – from budget to premium British, IB and American curricula. This guide gives fee ranges and example schools so you can make an informed choice. Note: regulations and school types (e.g. WFOE schools, bilingual) vary by city; confirm eligibility and latest rules.

Quick overview of fee ranges (annual tuition, indicative)

  • Budget: Roughly RMB 120,000–220,000 per year (primary). Bilingual or newer international programmes, recognised curricula.
  • Mid-tier: Roughly RMB 250,000–350,000 per year (primary). Established international schools, good facilities.
  • Premium: Roughly RMB 360,000–450,000+ per year (primary). Top facilities, strong IGCSE/IBDP.

Secondary and IGCSE/IBDP years are typically higher.

Budget end: example schools and fees

Yew Wah International Education School, Nord Anglia Chinese International School (NACIS) (certain programmes) and Wellington College Bilingual can sit in the budget band. Primary often RMB 140,000–220,000 per year. Check each school’s latest fee schedule and eligibility.

Mid-tier: example schools and fees

British International School Shanghai (BISS), Dulwich College Beijing and Nord Anglia School Shanghai Pudong are mid-tier examples. Primary often RMB 260,000–350,000; secondary/IBDP can be RMB 350,000–420,000. Strong British/IB provision.

Premium: example schools and fees

Shanghai American School (SAS), Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) and Harrow International School Beijing sit at the premium end. Primary can be RMB 380,000–450,000 and secondary/IBDP RMB 420,000–500,000+. Extensive facilities and university placement.

What to watch beyond tuition

  • Registration and enrolment fees (one-off; can be RMB 20,000–50,000+).
  • Learning support and EAL – often extra; can add RMB 30,000–80,000+ per year.
  • Board exam fees (IGCSE, IB, A level) – not in tuition; budget RMB 25,000–60,000+ per exam session.
  • Eligibility and regulatory changes – confirm who can attend and any fee impact.

How to choose

  • Confirm eligibility for your family; decide budget band and curriculum.
  • Get full fee schedules (tuition + one-off and annual extras).
  • Compare total cost over 3–5 years and fee progression by year group.
  • Ask what is included vs add-on (support, trips, exams).
