IGCSE Retakes: Complete Guide to When, How and Cost for Cambridge & Edexcel
IGCSE Retakes: When, How and Cost
IGCSE retakes let you improve a grade in one or more subjects. Both Cambridge and Edexcel allow unlimited retakes; the main things to plan are when to sit again, how to enter (school or private), and cost.
When Can You Retake IGCSE?
- Anytime in a later exam session (e.g. next May/June or October/November).
- No limit on how many times you can retake a subject.
- Your best result from the same syllabus is usually what counts for universities and employers once you “cash in” (see below).
How Retakes Work
- Re-enter for the same subject (and same syllabus/option codes) at an exam centre.
- Sit the exam again in the next (or a later) session.
- You receive a new grade for that sitting.
- When you’re happy with your set of grades, you can cash in to get a certificate that shows the best outcomes (board rules apply).
Cost of Retakes
- You pay full exam fees again for each subject/component you retake.
- Fees are set by the centre (e.g. British Council or school), so retake cost is similar to a first sitting.
- Private candidates pay the centre’s fee; school candidates pay whatever the school charges.
Should You Retake?
- Retake if one grade is holding you back (e.g. for A-Level or university requirements).
- Don’t retake every subject “just in case”—focus on subjects where a higher grade clearly helps your next step.
