IGCSE Exam Day Rules and Regulations

Knowing exam day rules helps you avoid stress and disqualification. Rules are set by the board and your centre; here’s a practical overview.

What to Bring

  • ID (e.g. passport, national ID) as required by your centre.
  • Statement of Entry (or whatever the centre asks for).
  • Pens, pencils, eraser, ruler (unless the centre provides them).
  • Calculator only if allowed for that subject (check the syllabus and centre instructions).
  • Clear bottle of water if the centre allows it.

What Not to Bring

  • Phones, smartwatches, earpieces—usually banned and must be left outside or switched off in your bag.
  • Notes, books, formula sheets unless explicitly allowed (e.g. in some language or maths papers).
  • Correcting fluid (e.g. Tipp-Ex) is often not allowed; cross out mistakes neatly instead.

During the Exam

  • Arrive at the time stated by the centre.
  • Listen to invigilator instructions.
  • No communication with other candidates.
  • No leaving the room without permission (e.g. toilet escorted).
  • Stop writing when told; do not open papers or use phones until you’re dismissed.

If You Break the Rules

  • Minor issues (e.g. phone in bag but not used) may lead to a warning or report.
  • Serious breaches (e.g. cheating, phone used) can lead to disqualification and no result.
  • Your centre will give you a copy of the rules before exam day—read them.
