IGCSE Exam Day Rules and Regulations 2026: Avoid Disqualification
Knowing IGCSE exam rules helps you avoid mistakes that could lead to disqualification. Here’s what you need to follow on exam day.
Banned Items
Do not bring into the exam room:
- Phones – Switch off and leave in your bag or at home
- Smartwatches – Remove before entering
- Notes, textbooks, crib sheets
- Correcting fluid – Unless explicitly allowed (many centres disallow it)
- Communicating devices – Earbuds, smart glasses, etc.
- Bags – Usually left outside; only bring what’s allowed
Bringing or using any of these can be treated as malpractice and may result in disqualification.
Allowed Items (Check With Your Centre)
- Clear pencil case with pens, pencils, eraser, ruler, compass, protractor
- Approved calculator (for subjects that allow it)
- Clear water bottle (no labels)
- Dictionary (only where permitted, e.g. some language papers)
Conduct Rules
- Arrive on time – Late arrival may mean you cannot sit the exam
- No communication – No talking, gesturing, or sharing materials
- No copying – Your work must be your own
- No leaving early – Usually not allowed in the first hour or last 15 minutes
- Follow instructions – Do what invigilators say immediately
Malpractice
Examples of malpractice:
- Bringing unauthorised materials
- Copying from another candidate
- Allowing someone to copy from you
- Using a phone or smartwatch
- Disrupting the exam
Penalties range from warning to cancellation of results or ban from future exams.
If You Need Help
- Feeling unwell – Tell an invigilator; you may be able to apply for special consideration
- Clarification – Raise your hand; invigilators can clarify procedure, not content
- Extra paper – Raise your hand if you need more answer sheets
Best Approach
Follow the rules, bring only what’s allowed, and focus on your own paper. When in doubt, ask your school or centre in advance.
