IGCSE ICT: data analysis and spreadsheets is one of the most searched topics because spreadsheet tasks appear in practical papers and test both formulae and interpretation. You need to use formulae (e.g. SUM, AVERAGE, IF, COUNTIF, VLOOKUP), charts, and sort/filter correctly under time pressure.

Essential Spreadsheet Formulae for IGCSE

  • SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX – For totals and basic statistics.
  • IF – e.g. =IF(A1>50,“Pass”,“Fail”); nested IFs for more than two outcomes.
  • COUNTIF, SUMIF – Count or sum cells that meet a condition.
  • VLOOKUP (or HLOOKUP) – Look up a value in a table; check your syllabus for which functions are required.
  • Relative vs absolute – $A$1 for fixed cell reference when copying.

Always check your formula in one cell before copying; use the correct range (e.g. A2:A100).

Charts and Data Analysis

  • Choose the right chart – Bar for categories, line for time series, pie for proportions (syllabus may specify).
  • Label axes and give the chart a title.
  • Sort and filter to answer “find” or “list” questions; state criteria clearly.

Practise with past practical papers or sample tasks so you are used to the software and question style.

Common Formulae and Exam-Style Tasks

SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX for basic totals and statistics. IF for conditional results (e.g. Pass/Fail). COUNTIF and SUMIF for counting or summing cells that meet a condition. VLOOKUP (or HLOOKUP) for looking up values in a table—check your syllabus for which functions are required. Use absolute referencing ($A$1) when you need a fixed cell when copying. Common mistakes: Wrong range in a formula (e.g. A1:A10 instead of A2:A11); not checking the formula in one cell before copying; choosing the wrong chart type. Always label charts and axes and give the chart a title as specified in the task.
