IGCSE Core vs Extended: Which Tier Should You Take?
IGCSE Core vs Extended is a key choice in many Cambridge IGCSE subjects (e.g. Maths, Sciences, some languages). Students search for this because the tier affects the difficulty of the paper and the grades you can achieve. Your school usually decides or advises based on your current level.
What Is the Difference?
-
Core
- Grades available: C to G (no A*, A, or B).
- Content: Focus on core topics; accessible to a wide range of learners.
- Use: For students who need a solid pass (C and above) without aiming for the highest grades.
-
Extended
- Grades available: A* to E (full range of top grades).
- Content: Includes extra and harder topics; more demanding.
- Use: For students aiming for A*, A, or B and for progression to A-Level or IB.
You cannot get an A* or A on Core; you cannot get below E on Extended (in the usual grading). So if you want A*–B, you need Extended.
How to Choose (With Your School)
- Target grade – Aiming for A*–B → Extended. Aiming for C–G and need a manageable workload → Core.
- Current performance – Schools often use mocks and classwork to recommend tier.
- Future plans – Many A-Level or IB courses expect at least a B (or equivalent) in the subject, which usually means Extended.
Tutopiya tutors can help you strengthen your preparation for either Core or Extended and practice with the right level of questions.
Can I Change Tier After Entering?
In many cases you can change tier before the final entry deadline (your school or exam centre will know the date). If you are entered for Core but your mock results suggest you could achieve a B or higher on Extended, it may be worth switching. Similarly, if you are on Extended and struggling, moving to Core might be the right choice. Discuss with your teacher and check the board’s rules and deadlines.
How Tier Choice Affects Your Certificate
Your certificate will show the syllabus (e.g. Mathematics 0580) and your grade. It will not usually say “Core” or “Extended”; universities and employers see the grade. So an A on Extended and a C on Core are both valid; the key is that Core cannot award A*, A, or B, so if you need those grades you must be entered for Extended.
