Evaluate is the most searched IGCSE command word because it appears in extended questions and essay-style tasks that carry high marks. To evaluate means to weigh up arguments or factors and reach a judgement – not just list pros and cons.

What Evaluate Means

• Evaluate: Consider strengths and weaknesses (or advantages and disadvantages, or factors for and against), use evidence or examples, and conclude with a supported judgement.
• Not enough: Only listing “advantages” and “disadvantages” without saying which matter more or what you conclude.
• What examiners want: “On one hand … on the other hand … Overall I think … because …”

So you need balance, evidence, and a clear conclusion.

How to Structure an Evaluate Answer

1. Introduction (optional but helpful): State the issue and that you will weigh up different sides.
2. One side: Give 1–2 points for (with brief evidence or example).
3. Other side: Give 1–2 points against (with brief evidence or example).
4. Judgement: “Overall …” or “In conclusion …” – state your view and give a reason (e.g. “because the benefits outweigh the drawbacks in most cases”).
5. Length: Match the mark allocation; 6 marks might need 2+2+judgement; 10 marks need more depth.

Common Mistakes in Evaluate Answers and How to Fix Them

Only listing pros and cons without a judgement—examiners want a clear “Overall I think… because…”. One-sided answers—you must give both sides before concluding. Vague judgement—“It depends” is weak unless you say what it depends on and then give your view. No evidence or examples—support your points with facts or examples.
