IGCSE Maths 0580 vs 0607: Which Exam Code Should You Take?

Choosing between Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) and Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics (0607) can feel confusing. Both are widely recognised IGCSE maths qualifications, but they differ in structure, papers, calculator use, and who they suit. This guide compares the two so you can choose the right exam code for your goals and school.

Quick comparison

AspectIGCSE Mathematics 0580IGCSE International Mathematics 0607
FocusTraditional maths (algebra, geometry, statistics)Broader; includes more modelling and investigations
PapersCore: 2 papers (Paper 1 non-calc, Paper 3 calc). Extended: 2 papers (Paper 2 non-calc, Paper 4 calc)3 papers: Paper 1, Paper 2 (calculator allowed), and Paper 6 Investigation and Modelling (Extended; calculator allowed)
CalculatorOne non-calculator and one calculator paper at each levelCalculator (including Graphic Display Calculator) allowed in all papers
DifficultyCore (grades C–G), Extended (A*–E); Extended is harderPaper 6 (Investigation and Modelling) is very demanding; Papers 1 and 2 are standard
PopularityVery high; most common IGCSE maths code globallyGrowing; common in international schools offering 0607

Papers you need to choose (0580)

  • Core (0580): Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator). Grades C–G only.
  • Extended (0580): Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator). Grades A*–E; can achieve A*.

You choose either Core or Extended. You cannot mix. Most students aiming for A*–C take Extended.

Papers and calculator use (0607)

0607 has three papers:

  • Paper 1 and Paper 2: Short and extended response; calculator allowed for both.
  • Paper 6 – Investigation and Modelling (Extended): 1 hour 40 minutes, 60 marks. Part A is Investigation (questions 1–4); Part B is Modelling (questions 5–10). Graphic Display Calculator (GDC) allowed. Paper 6 is often considered the hardest paper: it tests mathematical investigation and real-life modelling rather than routine techniques.

Your school will confirm whether you take Paper 6 (some centres offer it as part of the full 0607 assessment).

Which is harder or easier?

  • 0580 Extended is often considered harder for students who struggle with non-calculator techniques and heavy algebra/geometry.
  • 0607 Papers 1 and 2 allow a calculator throughout and can feel more manageable for routine maths.
  • 0607 Paper 6 (Investigation and Modelling) is very hard: it demands open-ended investigation, modelling, and clear mathematical communication; many students find it the most challenging part of 0607.
  • 0580 Core is the least demanding option but caps at grade C.

0580 is by far the more popular code globally: most schools and universities are familiar with it. 0607 is well established in many international schools and is accepted by universities; check your target schools or curricula (e.g. A-Level, IB) if you are considering 0607.
