IGCSE Computer Science vs ICT: Which Is Right for You?

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) both sit in the “computing” family but focus on different things: Computer Science is about programming, data, and how computers work; ICT is about using software, digital tools, and communication. This guide compares them so you can choose the right subject.

Papers you need

  • Computer Science: Paper 1 (theory: data, hardware, software, programming concepts) and Paper 2 (problem-solving and programming — often pseudocode or a programming language). Some schools offer Paper 3 (practical programming) as an alternative to part of Paper 2 — check with your school.
  • ICT: Paper 1 (theory) and Paper 2 or 3 (practical: documents, spreadsheets, databases, presentations). Your school will confirm which practical option you take.

Which is harder or easier?

  • Computer Science can feel harder if you find programming and logic challenging. It is more theoretical and problem-solving focused.
  • ICT can feel more accessible if you prefer using software and producing documents, though the theory and practical exams still require preparation.

“Easier” or “harder” often depends on whether you prefer programming and theory (Computer Science) or using software and communication (ICT).

Both are very popular. Computer Science is often chosen by students aiming for computing, engineering, or STEM degrees. ICT is popular with students who want general IT skills and may go into business, media, or other fields. You can take both if your school allows.
