IGCSE Combined Science vs Coordinated Science: A Clear Comparison

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science (0653) is a single award (one IGCSE grade). Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Science (0654) is a double award (two IGCSE grades, e.g. AA, BC). Both cover Biology, Chemistry, and Physics but differ in depth, how the subjects are linked, and how many papers you sit. This guide compares them so you can choose the right option.

Quick comparison

AspectIGCSE Combined ScienceIGCSE Coordinated Science
SyllabusBiology, Chemistry, Physics in one combined syllabus (0653)Biology, Chemistry, Physics coordinated across three subjects (0654)
AwardSingle award — one IGCSE gradeDouble award — two IGCSE grades (e.g. AA, BC)
Papers6 papers (2 per science); Core or Extended6 papers (2 per science); Core or Extended
ContentSlightly less depth per subject; more cross-topicMore depth and clearer separation of the three sciences
DifficultyOften seen as slightly lighter per subjectCan feel harder due to more content and depth
PopularityVery common in schools wanting a single science awardVery common; many schools prefer it for double award

Papers you need to choose

  • Combined Science: You take 2 papers for Biology, 2 for Chemistry, 2 for Physics. Schools typically choose Core (grades C–G) or Extended (A*–E) across all three.
  • Coordinated Science: Same idea—2 papers per subject, Core or Extended. The difference is in syllabus content and coordination across the three subjects, not number of papers.

Combined Science (0653) gives one IGCSE grade; Coordinated Science (0654) gives two IGCSE grades. You do not sit separate single-science exams for either.

Calculator use

Science papers are mostly calculator allowed where calculations are needed. Some short questions may be non-calculator. Your school will confirm per paper.

Which is harder or easier?

  • Combined Science (0653) is often considered a bit easier in terms of content volume per subject; it gives one IGCSE grade and can suit students who want a single science qualification without the depth of Coordinated or Triple Science.
  • Coordinated Science usually has more content and stronger emphasis on each discipline, so it can feel harder but better preparation for A-Level or IB sciences.

Both are very popular. Coordinated Science is often the default double-award in international schools. Combined Science is also widely used. Choice often depends on what your school offers and what your next step (e.g. A-Level Biology/Chemistry/Physics) requires.
