Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science: Complete Guide to Papers, Core/Extended & Revision
Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science: Your Complete Guide
Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science (0653) is a single award qualification: you study Biology, Chemistry, and Physics and receive one IGCSE grade. This guide covers papers, Core vs Extended, calculator use, and how to prepare.
What is IGCSE Combined Science?
Combined Science (0653) covers the three sciences in one syllabus. Content is slightly less deep per subject than in Coordinated Science or Triple Science. You sit six papers (2 per science) and receive one IGCSE grade (single award).
Papers you need to choose
You take 6 papers in total:
- Biology: 2 papers (Core or Extended — your school chooses one level for all three sciences).
- Chemistry: 2 papers (Core or Extended).
- Physics: 2 papers (Core or Extended).
You cannot mix Core and Extended across subjects. Most students aiming for strong grades take Extended in all three.
Calculator use
Calculators are allowed in science papers where calculations are required. You must show working and use correct units.
How hard is Combined Science? Is it popular?
- Difficulty: Often seen as slightly lighter per subject than Coordinated Science, but still demanding. Extended across all three sciences is a substantial workload.
- Popularity: Combined Science (0653) is very popular in schools that want a single science qualification without offering three separate sciences.
