IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Explained for Students and Parents
What is Theory of Knowledge (TOK)?
Theory of Knowledge is a core IB subject that explores how we know what we know. It is taught over about 100 hours across the two years and is required for the diploma.
Core question
TOK asks: How do we justify our beliefs? It links different areas of knowledge (sciences, arts, history, etc.) and ways of knowing (sense perception, reason, emotion, language).
Themes and structure
TOK centres on themes such as:
- Knowledge and the knower
- Optional themes (e.g. knowledge and technology, knowledge and politics)
Students connect these to their DP subjects and real-world examples.
Assessment (from 2022)
| Component | Format | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| TOK Exhibition | Internal; 950 words; 3 objects | 33% |
| TOK Essay | External; 1,600 words; preset titles | 67% |
Both are marked using IB criteria.
TOK and the diploma
TOK and the EE together contribute up to 3 points to the total diploma score via a matrix. Students must participate in TOK to be awarded the diploma.
Common challenges
- Abstract thinking—moving from “what” to “how we know”
- Linking to subjects—using examples from different areas
- Essay titles—choosing and unpacking preset questions
Tips for success
- Use concrete examples from your subjects and life
- Consider multiple perspectives
- Question assumptions—why do we accept some claims?
- Practise TOK vocabulary (justification, evidence, certainty)
