IB Mathematics: Two pathways

The IB offers two Mathematics courses: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI). Both are available at SL and HL. The choice depends on your interests and future plans.

AA: Analysis and Approaches

Focus: Theory, structure and reasoning. Emphasis on why and how mathematics works.

• AI: Statistics, modelling, real-world applications

University and career

• STEM (maths, physics, engineering): AA HL often required or preferred
• Medicine, biology, social sciences: AI HL or SL often sufficient
• Economics, finance: AA or AI depending on the course
