IB Grade Descriptors 1–7: What Each Grade Means

The IB 1–7 scale

Each IB subject is graded from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Grade descriptors describe the quality of work at each level. Actual marking uses subject-specific criteria; these descriptors give a general picture.

Grade 7 — Excellent

  • Sophisticated understanding
  • Convincing, detailed independent analysis
  • Well-developed expression with very good accuracy and clarity
  • Effective structure with relevant support

Grade 6 — Very good

  • Strong understanding
  • Mainly convincing responses with good detail
  • Well-developed expression, good accuracy
  • Effective structure with relevant support

Grade 5 — Good

  • Good understanding
  • Generally valid analysis and evaluation
  • Good expression, adequate accuracy
  • Clear structure with relevant support

Grade 4 — Adequate (satisfactory)

  • Adequate knowledge
  • Generally valid analysis
  • Satisfactory expression, some lapses
  • Basic structure

Grade 3 — Satisfactory (limited)

  • Some knowledge and understanding
  • Responses sometimes valid
  • Some appropriate expression
  • Limited development, some structure

Grade 2 — Poor

  • Limited understanding
  • Weak development
  • Inadequate expression

Grade 1 — Very poor

  • Minimal evidence of understanding
  • Little relevant content

Important points

  • Work often shows mixed characteristics; examiners use criteria and boundaries to decide the final grade
  • Grade boundaries are set each session and are not fixed in advance
  • Subject criteria define exactly what is required; descriptors are indicative
