IB Grade Descriptors 1–7: What Each Grade Means

The IB 1–7 scale
Each IB subject is graded from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Grade descriptors describe the quality of work at each level. Actual marking uses subject-specific criteria; these descriptors give a general picture.
Grade 7 — Excellent
- Sophisticated understanding
- Convincing, detailed independent analysis
- Well-developed expression with very good accuracy and clarity
- Effective structure with relevant support
Grade 6 — Very good
- Strong understanding
- Mainly convincing responses with good detail
- Well-developed expression, good accuracy
- Effective structure with relevant support
Grade 5 — Good
- Good understanding
- Generally valid analysis and evaluation
- Good expression, adequate accuracy
- Clear structure with relevant support
Grade 4 — Adequate (satisfactory)
- Adequate knowledge
- Generally valid analysis
- Satisfactory expression, some lapses
- Basic structure
Grade 3 — Satisfactory (limited)
- Some knowledge and understanding
- Responses sometimes valid
- Some appropriate expression
- Limited development, some structure
Grade 2 — Poor
- Limited understanding
- Weak development
- Inadequate expression
Grade 1 — Very poor
- Minimal evidence of understanding
- Little relevant content
Important points
- Work often shows mixed characteristics; examiners use criteria and boundaries to decide the final grade
- Grade boundaries are set each session and are not fixed in advance
- Subject criteria define exactly what is required; descriptors are indicative
