What is the IB core?

The IB core is the shared requirement for all Diploma students: Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Together they develop research, critical thinking and engagement beyond the classroom.

The three components

Points from the core

EE and TOK combine to contribute up to 3 points via a matrix:

CAS does not contribute points but must be completed satisfactorily.

Diploma conditions

To receive the diploma, students must:

  • Pass all six subjects (and meet grade conditions)
  • Complete EE and TOK (no grade E in either)
  • Complete CAS satisfactorily

Time and workload

  • EE: Spread over 11+ months; significant independent work
  • TOK: ~100 hours of teaching; exhibition and essay
  • CAS: 150+ hours across two years; reflection and project
