IB Core Explained: EE, TOK and CAS Together
What is the IB core?
The IB core is the shared requirement for all Diploma students: Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Together they develop research, critical thinking and engagement beyond the classroom.
The three components
| Component | Purpose | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| EE | Independent research | 4,000-word essay; contributes to points |
| TOK | Critical reflection on knowledge | Exhibition + essay; contributes to points |
| CAS | Experiences beyond academics | Portfolio; satisfactory completion |
Points from the core
EE and TOK combine to contribute up to 3 points via a matrix:
| TOK grade | EE grade | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A | A | 3 |
| A | B | 3 |
| B | A | 3 |
| B | B | 2 |
| … | … | … |
| E | E | 0 (diploma not awarded) |
CAS does not contribute points but must be completed satisfactorily.
Diploma conditions
To receive the diploma, students must:
- Pass all six subjects (and meet grade conditions)
- Complete EE and TOK (no grade E in either)
- Complete CAS satisfactorily
Time and workload
- EE: Spread over 11+ months; significant independent work
- TOK: ~100 hours of teaching; exhibition and essay
- CAS: 150+ hours across two years; reflection and project
