GCSE Biology Past Papers: AQA, Edexcel & OCR

GCSE Biology rewards students who understand how to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar contexts — and past papers are the most reliable way to practise this skill. Working through genuine exam questions builds the subject confidence and technique that reading revision notes cannot replicate.

This guide covers past papers for AQA, Pearson Edexcel, and OCR — the three main exam boards for GCSE Biology in England.

AQA GCSE Biology (8461)

AQA is England’s largest GCSE Biology provider. The specification code for Separate Biology is 8461.

Paper Structure

PaperTopicsDurationMarks
Paper 1 (8461/1F or 1H)Cell biology, transport in cells, cell division, organisation, infection and response, bioenergetics1h 45m100
Paper 2 (8461/2F or 2H)Homeostasis and response, inheritance, variation and evolution, ecology1h 45m100

Papers are available at Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9) tier.

Key Topics Frequently Examined

Paper 1:

  • Cell structure and function (eukaryotic vs prokaryotic)
  • Mitosis and the cell cycle
  • Diffusion, osmosis, active transport
  • The immune system and vaccination
  • Photosynthesis and limiting factors
  • Respiration (aerobic and anaerobic)

Paper 2:

  • Hormonal control: insulin, glucagon, ADH
  • The nervous system and reflex arcs
  • Meiosis and genetic inheritance
  • Natural selection and evolution
  • Ecosystems, food chains, and biodiversity

Where to Find AQA Biology Past Papers

  • AQA’s official website (aqa.org.uk) — papers, mark schemes and examiner reports
  • Physics & Maths Tutor — topic-sorted past paper questions
  • Save My Exams — AQA-specific flashcards and worked solutions

Edexcel GCSE Biology (1BI0)

Pearson Edexcel’s GCSE Biology specification code is 1BI0.

Paper Structure

PaperTopicsDurationMarks
Paper 1 (1BI0/1F or 1H)Key concepts in biology, cells and control, genetics, natural selection and genetic modification, health, disease and medicine1h 45m100
Paper 2 (1BI0/2F or 2H)Plant structures and functions, animal coordination, homeostasis, exchange and transport in animals, ecosystems and material cycles1h 45m100

Where to Find Edexcel Biology Past Papers

  • Pearson qualifications (qualifications.pearson.com) — official free papers
  • Revisely — Edexcel-organised past paper questions

OCR GCSE Biology (J257 and J259)

OCR offers two routes:

  • J257 — OCR Gateway Biology
  • J259 — OCR 21st Century Biology

Paper Structure (Gateway J257)

PaperTopicsDurationMarks
Paper 1 (J257/01)Cell level systems, scaling up, organisms exchange substances with environment1h 30m90
Paper 2 (J257/02)Genetics and evolution, human impact on biodiversity, practical skills1h 30m90

Where to Find OCR Biology Past Papers

  • OCR’s website (ocr.org.uk) — free official papers and mark schemes
  • PMT (Physics & Maths Tutor) — good OCR coverage

How to Use Past Papers for GCSE Biology

Practise Drawing and Labelling Diagrams

GCSE Biology regularly asks students to draw or complete diagrams — of cells, organs, the heart, the eye, or reflex arcs. Practise these from memory, not by copying from your notes.

Master the 6-Mark Extended Response Questions

Every GCSE Biology paper includes extended response questions worth 5–6 marks. These require organised, structured answers that cover multiple points logically. Use the mark scheme to understand exactly what points are required — and in what order they appear.

Apply the Command Word to Your Answer

Different command words demand different response types:

  • Describe — state what happens (no explanation needed)
  • Explain — give reasons why something happens
  • Evaluate — weigh up evidence and reach a justified conclusion
  • Compare — identify similarities and differences explicitly

Time Your Practice

GCSE Biology papers are 1 hour 45 minutes. Many students run out of time because they spend too long on early questions. In practice papers, allocate roughly 1 minute per mark and move on if you are stuck.

Common Mistakes in GCSE Biology Exams

Using vague language. Writing “the body gets more energy” instead of “the rate of aerobic respiration increases, releasing more ATP” will not earn the mark.

Confusing mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis = two identical daughter cells (growth, repair). Meiosis = four genetically different cells (gametes). This distinction is tested heavily.

Forgetting units. Always include units for measurements — cm², mm, °C, g/dm³.

Not reading the data. Many biology questions provide a graph or table. Students lose marks by ignoring the data and writing general knowledge answers instead.
