Edexcel International A-level command words

Pearson Edexcel defines command words in each International A-level specification. Command words ensure consistency across the qualification. At A-level, levels-based mark schemes are used for extended writing—Evaluate, Assess, Discuss, Justify—and these carry significantly more weight than at IGCSE.

A-level: extended writing weight

At International A-level:

  • Extended writing carries more marks than at IGCSE.
  • Level descriptors assess overall quality—structure, depth, use of evidence, conclusion.
  • Best-fit marking—your answer is placed in the descriptor that fits best.
  • Trait expectations—each level describes what examiners look for (e.g. developed analysis, balanced argument, clear conclusion).

Subject-specific command words

Edexcel subject specifications may include additional command words. Check your subject specification (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, English, History, Business, Computer Science) for the full taxonomy.
