Extended writing at AQA A-level

Evaluate, Assess and Discuss are higher-order command words used for extended responses. AQA uses levels of response mark schemes—your answer is judged against descriptors. All four assessment objectives (knowledge, application, analysis, evaluation) are taken into account when awarding marks.

Assess

AQA: Consider relative merits of various arguments and weigh them up to make an informed judgement.

Select the most important factors, weigh them up, and come to a reasoned conclusion. The response should include well-developed analysis and consideration of circumstances when the proposition may or may not apply. Conclusion that weighs up arguments and presents overall assessment.

Evaluate

AQA: Consider arguments for and against alternative options and come to a conclusion supported by economic analysis and evidence. (Defined in Economics context; similar across subjects.)

Weigh up different aspects, make a judgement, and back it up with evidence. Consider validity, counterarguments and circumstances. Conclusion with final judgement on the question.

Discuss

AQA: Present both sides of an argument and come to a conclusion that is supported by analysis and evidence.

Explore different sides of an issue, consider different viewpoints, and end with a conclusion. Key points must be presented for and against; these must be analysed and evaluated to reach a supported judgement.

Levels of response

To earn full marks (e.g. 25 marks in Economics):

  • Sound, focused analysis and well-supported evaluation
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of relevant concepts
  • Good application to the context
  • Clear, logical chains of reasoning
  • Supported evaluation throughout and in the final conclusion
