A Level Exam Dates 2026: Full Timetable for AQA, Edexcel & OCR
A Level Exam Dates 2026
A Level examinations in England begin in May 2026 and run through to the third week of June. For students in Year 13, this is the most important exam period of their academic life so far — the grades that determine university entry.
When Do A Level Exams Start in 2026?
A Level exams follow broadly the same pattern each year:
- Early May: First papers begin — often English Literature, some humanities subjects
- Mid May–Early June: Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Mathematics
- Mid June: Final papers for most subjects
- Results Day: Second Thursday of August 2026 — typically 13 August 2026 or similar
UCAS Clearing opens on results day, so mark this date carefully.
Always confirm your specific dates with your school. Your school enters you for specific papers on specific dates — these are fixed for you individually.
A Level Results Day 2026
A Level results are released on the second Thursday of August, expected to be around 13 August 2026. Results are available from approximately 8:00am — check your school’s arrangements.
What results show:
- A Level grades: A*, A, B, C, D, E (U = ungraded)
- Grades are set by examiners using grade boundaries determined after all papers have been marked
- Raw mark grade boundaries are published on the day of results
UCAS and University Offers
Firm and Insurance Offers
Before results day, you will have accepted two university offers through UCAS:
- Firm choice (CF): Your first-choice university
- Insurance choice (CI): Your backup university
When results arrive:
- If you meet your firm conditions → you go to your firm choice
- If you miss your firm but meet your insurance → you go to your insurance
- If you miss both → you enter Clearing
UCAS Clearing 2026
Clearing opens on A Level results day and is available through late September. If you miss your offers, Clearing allows you to find a place on a different course — often at a different university. Some students deliberately use Clearing to trade up to a better university if they outperform predictions.
The Clearing process:
- Log in to UCAS Track
- Find your Clearing number
- Browse available courses on the UCAS search tool
- Ring universities directly and discuss your grades
- Add your Clearing choice through UCAS Track

How to Use the Final Weeks Before A Level Exams
6+ weeks before: Focus on completing the specification — ensure you’ve covered all topics, including optional modules.
4–6 weeks before: Begin full past paper practice under timed conditions. At least one full paper per subject per week.
2–4 weeks before: Intense focus on weak areas identified from past paper marking. Review mark schemes and examiner reports.
Final 1–2 weeks: Light revision only — review notes, practise short questions. Prioritise sleep, exercise and food over cramming.
