Angles and the image in a plane mirror
A small lamp O is cm in front of a plane mirror. A ray from O strikes the mirror at point M and reflects into an eye at E. The ray makes an angle of with the surface of the mirror, as shown.
(a) Calculate the angle of incidence.
(b) State the angle of reflection.
(c) Calculate the angle OME between the incident ray and the reflected ray.
(d) The eye sees an image of the lamp. State where this image is and give two of its characteristics.
- 1
(a) Angles of incidence and reflection are always measured from the normal, which is at to the mirror. The is measured from the surface, so subtract it from .
- 2
(b) For reflection, the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence.
- 3
(c) The incident ray and the reflected ray lie on either side of the normal, so the angle between them is the sum of the two angles.
- 4
(d) The image in a plane mirror is the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front, on the normal through the object. So the image is cm behind the mirror, directly opposite O, which puts it cm from the lamp itself.
- 5
Any two characteristics: it is virtual (the reflected rays only appear to come from it, so it cannot be caught on a screen), the same size as the object, and upright.
Answer
(a) (b) (c) (d) cm behind the mirror, directly opposite O ( cm from O); virtual and the same size (also upright)
Examiner tip
The June 2025 examiner report noted that "some measured the angle between the ray and the mirror." The angle of incidence is always taken from the normal, so an angle given to the surface must be subtracted from first. When describing the image, same distance from the mirror and virtual are the key syllabus words; saying only that the image is behind the mirror, without giving the distance, is not enough for the position mark.
