Identify and describe the states from particle diagrams
The diagram shows the particles in three samples of the same substance, X, Y and Z.
(a) State which sample is a solid, which is a liquid and which is a gas.
(b) Describe the particles in sample Z in terms of their separation, arrangement and motion.
- 1
(a) Y has particles touching in a regular, repeating pattern: solid. X has particles close together (mostly touching) but in an irregular arrangement: liquid. Z has particles far apart: gas.
- 2
(b) Separation: the particles in a gas are far apart — the distance between them is much larger than the size of a particle.
- 3
Arrangement: they are arranged randomly (irregularly), with no pattern.
- 4
Motion: they move rapidly in random directions, travelling in straight lines between collisions with each other and with the walls.
Answer
(a) X liquid, Y solid, Z gas (b) Far apart; random (irregular) arrangement; rapid, random motion
Examiner tip
Give one clear point for each of separation, arrangement and motion. The March 2026 examiner report noted that "A common ambiguous description of particle motion was to state that particles move freely." Say rapid and random instead. It also noted that "A few candidates confused the terms separation and arrangement of particles." Separation is how far apart they are; arrangement is whether there is a pattern.
