Completing the electromagnetic spectrum
The diagram shows the regions of the electromagnetic spectrum in order of increasing frequency. Two regions are labelled P and Q.
(a) Name the regions P and Q.
(b) State which region has the longest wavelength.
(c) State one property that is the same for all electromagnetic waves in a vacuum.
- 1
(a) In order of increasing frequency the regions are: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays. So P is microwaves and Q is ultraviolet.
- 2
(b) All electromagnetic waves have the same speed in a vacuum, so from the lowest frequency has the longest wavelength: radio waves, at the left-hand end.
- 3
(c) They all travel at the same speed in a vacuum, m/s. (Other accepted answers: they are all transverse waves; they can all travel through a vacuum.)
Answer
(a) P microwaves, Q ultraviolet (b) radio waves (c) same speed in a vacuum ( m/s)
Examiner tip
Learn the order as one list and practise reading it both ways: frequency increases from radio to gamma, so wavelength decreases the same way. A common error is to reverse the list when a question asks for increasing wavelength instead of increasing frequency.
