Places in town — learn the gender with the word
The buildings and places of a town, each with its le/la so the gender sticks.
Before you can ask where something is, you need to name it. The golden rule for a French beginner: never learn a noun on its own — always learn it with its article (le, la or l'), because French nouns have a gender and you cannot guess it reliably. Learn la gare (the station), not just gare.
- le (luh) = "the" before a masculine word.
- la (la) = "the" before a feminine word.
- l' (l) = "the" before any word starting with a vowel or silent h (l'hôtel, l'église).
- un (uhn) = "a" (masculine), une (ewn) = "a" (feminine).
Here are the high-frequency town places. The pronunciation column is a plain-English respelling (capitals show the stressed syllable).
