The circulatory system is responsible for transporting blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells and removing waste products. It includes components such as blood, blood vessels, and the heart, which work together to maintain circulation.
- Blood — A red fluid that acts as a transport medium for oxygen and nutrients. Example: Blood consists of plasma and blood cells like red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
- Red Blood Cells (RBCs) — Cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Example: RBCs contain haemoglobin, which binds to oxygen.
- White Blood Cells (WBCs) — Cells that protect the body from infections. Example: WBCs perform phagocytosis and produce antibodies.
- Platelets — Cell fragments that help in blood clotting. Example: Platelets release thromboplastin to aid in coagulation.
- Plasma — The liquid component of blood, mostly water, that carries nutrients and waste. Example: Plasma contains proteins, hormones, and waste products.
- Arteries — Blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. Example: Arteries have thick walls to handle high pressure.
- Veins — Blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Example: Veins have valves to prevent backflow of blood.
- Capillaries — Tiny blood vessels where exchange of gases and nutrients occurs. Example: Capillaries connect arteries and veins and have thin walls for diffusion.
