International schools should buy EdTech against their exact exam entries. Shortlist platforms that cover their Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel syllabus codes, prove one in a short pilot with a single question to answer, and plan adoption beyond the first fortnight. Check data protection and local rules before signing, such as ADEK’s requirement that AI learning tools meet its standards.

This is the hub for our EdTech Buying & Implementation pillar. It is written for principals, academic directors and heads of department who are shortlisting, piloting or renewing learning platforms. Disclosure: Tutopiya makes AI Buddy, one of the platforms discussed. Facts about other platforms come from their own websites.

What should a school look for in an IGCSE and A Level platform?

Six criteria decide most shortlists, in this order:

  1. Board and syllabus coverage. The exact codes you enter, for example Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1, at the levels you teach.
  2. Exam-style practice. Past papers or past-paper-style questions organised by syllabus and topic.
  3. Marking. Auto-marking, and whether written answers get AI feedback.
  4. Teacher control and data. Setting work, dashboards, and topic-level gaps a head of department can act on.
  5. Licensing and price. A school plan, and whether prices are published.
  6. Data protection. Where student data is hosted, how it is secured, and whether it is used to train AI models.

Coverage comes first because it is the most common reason a platform fails in practice. A platform that covers “IGCSE maths” may not cover the syllabus your students sit.

How do the main platforms compare?

Platforms differ most on board coverage and on whether they are built for revision content, textbooks or assessment. Our 2026 comparison sets out the details from each vendor’s own site. In summary:

PlatformStrongest fitCoverage noteSchool pricing published?
AI BuddyAssessment, marking and cohort dataCambridge and Pearson Edexcel, IGCSE and A LevelOn request

For AI marking specifically, see the best AI marking tools for IGCSE and A Level. Head-to-head comparisons are in AI Buddy vs Save My Exams, AI Buddy vs Kognity and AI Buddy vs exam-mate. Our existing comparisons against specific providers, including AI Buddy vs Seneca, are listed below.

What questions should schools ask every provider?

Ask the questions that are hard to answer after signing:

  • Which of our syllabus codes are covered in full, and which in part?
  • Where is student data hosted, who can access it, and is it used to train AI?
  • Can teachers see and override what the platform marks?
  • What does onboarding include, and who supports teachers in the first month?
  • What happens to our data if we leave?
  • Can it be branded as our school’s platform?

Our guide to questions to ask every EdTech provider expands each one, and the EdTech procurement checklist turns them into a twelve-point template.

How should a school run an EdTech pilot?

Short, focused and with a decision date. A pilot fails when it has no question to answer, so write one down before starting. Examples: “does this cut Year 11 science marking time?” or “does weekly practice raise mock scores in 0580 Paper 4?” Then:

  1. Pick one department and one year group, ideally with a mock inside the pilot window.
  2. Check coverage before day one against the syllabus codes in use.
  3. Measure the question, not general usage. Usage data shows activity, not learning.
  4. Decide on the date set, and write down the reason either way.

The full week-by-week method, with success criteria and a scorecard, is in The 30-Day EdTech Pilot. Our existing guide on why most EdTech pilots fail looks at the common failure points.

How should a school implement a platform after buying it?

Treat the first term as the implementation, not the contract date. For keeping students on the platform once the novelty fades, see the adoption playbook. Most of the value, or the waste, is decided in the first twelve weeks. A plan that works in most schools has five parts:

  1. One owner. A named senior leader accountable for adoption, and a lead teacher in each department who uses it first and supports colleagues.
  2. A routine, not a launch. Decide where the platform sits in the week: homework, starter quizzes, a fortnightly assessment. Put it in the department calendar before term starts.
  3. Training on the job teachers already do. Show teachers how to set this week’s homework and read the results, rather than every feature.
  4. A first-term checkpoint. At half term, check the measure chosen at the pilot stage, for example marking time, completion or mock scores, and act on what it shows.
  5. An honest review. At the end of the first year, keep, expand or stop, based on the same measure. A platform that is not used should be cancelled, not renewed out of habit.

Our existing guide on subject-level adoption explains why departments, not whole schools, are usually the right unit for rollout.

Why do students stop using learning platforms?

Usually because the platform is not built into routine. Students use a platform when teachers set work on it, look at the results and act on them in lessons. They stop when it is an optional extra. Adoption depends more on teacher habits than on the platform. Schedule it into homework, discuss results in class, and give heads of department a reason to check the dashboard weekly. See the silent drop-off: why students stop using learning platforms.

How should schools think about cost and return?

Our EdTech ROI guide sets out the calculation in full, and school groups should also read white-label learning platforms.

Compare cost per student against the specific outcome the pilot measured, not against a vendor’s headline claims. Published school prices vary widely. exam-mate publishes per-account pricing, Seneca offers a free core with paid tiers, and CENTURY lists a school licence from £2,860 a year. Others quote on request. Whatever the price, the return a leader can defend is the one measured in their own school: marking hours saved, mock scores improved, or intervention delivered, compared with before. Budget against cost per active student, not per licence; see how much an international school should spend on digital learning.

What data protection rules apply?

The law of the country where the school operates applies, and it varies. Our existing guides cover GDPR for schools and choosing GDPR-compliant EdTech for schools under UK and EU law. Regulators may add their own requirements. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK requires schools “to use AI learning tools that meet ADEK requirements”. Its Technology and AI Policy sets safeguards on data protection and student privacy, human oversight of AI-generated decisions and academic integrity. Check local rules with your regulator before signing any contract that involves student data. For how the GDPR compares with the UAE, Saudi, Kenyan, Nigerian and Malaysian laws, see student data protection across borders.

Does EdTech help with digital and onscreen exams?

It can build the habits students need, but it is not the exam platform. Cambridge’s digital exams and Pearson’s onscreen exams run on the boards’ own systems, with locked-down devices and set requirements. A platform that gives regular timed practice on screen helps students with typing, navigation and pacing before a Cambridge Digital Mock or Pearson Sandbox session. See Cambridge digital exams and Edexcel onscreen exams.

How schools do this with AI Buddy

AI Buddy is Tutopiya’s school-licensed learning and assessment platform for Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE and A Level. It covers 26 subjects with 200,000+ auto-marked past-paper-style questions, AI feedback, a test builder, mock exams with predicted-grade insights, and individual and cohort dashboards. It can be white-labelled under the school’s name, and student data sits in GDPR-compliant, encrypted hosting. Schools typically pilot it with one department around a mock, then decide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best EdTech for international schools?

The platform that covers your exact boards and syllabus codes and answers the problem you are trying to solve, whether that is marking time, revision content or cohort data. Compare against your entries, not feature lists.

How long should an EdTech pilot last?

Long enough to include one measurable event, such as a mock, and no longer. Set the decision date before starting.

What should an EdTech procurement checklist include?

Syllabus coverage, data hosting and use, teacher control over marking, onboarding and support, exit terms, pricing and local regulatory requirements.

Do learning platforms need to meet UAE regulator requirements?

In Abu Dhabi, ADEK requires AI learning tools to meet its requirements. Check with your regulator before adopting any AI tool.
