IB French B examiners reward range AND accuracy across tenses. Plan to use at least 4 tenses in every long writing answer.

Habitual / current actions.

-ER (parler)

Passé composé vs imparfait

Two past tenses with different aspect — examiners reward correct contrast.

Passé composé

Completed actions. Avoir/Être (présent) + participe passé. Triggers: hier, soudain, l'année dernière, en 2019.

Imparfait

Description / habit / background. Stem (nous form, drop -ons) + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Triggers: souvent, toujours, tous les jours, quand j'étais petit.

MRS VANDERTRAMP + reflexives use ÊTRE

Past participle agrees with subject for ÊTRE verbs (elle est allée, ils sont arrivés).

Combine: 'Pendant que je lisais (imparfait), le téléphone a sonné (passé composé).'

Futur, conditionnel & futur proche

Futur simple

Infinitive (drop -e on -re verbs) + -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont → je parlerai, je finirai, je vendrai.

Conditionnel présent

Future stem + imparfait endings → je parlerais ('I would speak' / polite). 'Si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais.'

Futur proche

ALLER (présent) + infinitif → 'je vais manger' (I'm going to eat).

Common irregular stems

être → ser-, avoir → aur-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-, savoir → saur-, pouvoir → pourr-, vouloir → voudr-, devoir → devr-, venir → viendr-, voir → verr-.

Plus-que-parfait & futur antérieur

Plus-que-parfait

Avoir/être (imparfait) + participe passé → 'j'avais parlé' (I had spoken). Used for an action before another past action.

Futur antérieur

Avoir/être (futur) + participe passé → 'j'aurai fini' (I will have finished). Often after 'quand', 'dès que', 'lorsque'.

Subjonctif — four required uses at IB

After expressions of doubt, emotion, will, necessity and certain conjunctions.

Subjonctif présent

Take 3rd person plural présent stem (ils parlent → parl-) + -e/-es/-e/-ions/-iez/-ent. 'Il faut que tu parles.'

Subjonctif passé

Avoir/être (subj. présent) + participe passé. 'Je suis content que tu aies fini.'

Subjonctif imparfait (recognise)

Literary; recognised but rarely produced.

Subjonctif plus-que-parfait (recognise)

Avoir/être (subj. imparfait) + participe passé.

Triggers: il faut que · vouloir/souhaiter que · avoir peur que · bien que · pour que · avant que · à condition que · jusqu'à ce que · ne pas penser que.

Adjective agreement & position

Add -e (f.) · -s (pl.) · -es (f. pl.) — petit, petite, petits, petites.

BAGS (before noun)

Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size — beau, jeune, bon, mauvais, grand, petit, joli, nouveau, vieux.

Comparative / superlative

plus / moins / aussi + adj. + que; le/la/les plus + adj.; bon → meilleur(e) → le/la meilleur(e); mauvais → pire; bien → mieux.

Adverb formation

Feminine adjective + -ment → lente → lentement; vrai → vraiment. Irregular: bon → bien · mauvais → mal · meilleur → mieux.

After preposition — 'la table sur laquelle j'écris'.

Demonstrative & possessive pronouns

Demonstrative

celui · celle · ceux · celles (+ -ci/-là, qui, que, de) → 'celui que je préfère'.

Possessive

le mien, la mienne, les miens, les miennes; le tien, le sien, le nôtre, le vôtre, le leur.

Negation (incl. ne…que and ne explétif)

ne…pas · ne…jamais · ne…rien · ne…personne · ne…plus · ne…aucun(e) · ne…ni…ni.

ne…que

= 'only' (not a true negation): 'Je n'ai que dix euros.'

ne explétif

After avant que, à moins que, de peur que: 'avant qu'il ne parte' (no negative meaning).

Indirect speech & sequence of tenses

Reporting verb in past → présent → imparfait · passé composé → plus-que-parfait · futur → conditionnel · futur antérieur → conditionnel passé.

Every Paper 1 task is judged on whether you address audience, context, purpose, meaning AND variation through the right text type.

5 conceptual understandings

Audience (le public)

Who are you writing for? Adapt vocabulary, register and tone.

Context (le contexte)

When/where does the text appear? Magazine? Speech? School blog?

Purpose (le but)

Inform, persuade, narrate, entertain, instruct.

Meaning (le sens)

Choose register, syntax and vocabulary that convey your intended meaning precisely.

Variation (la variation)

Adjust formality, dialect markers and tone for the situation.

Internal documents (private register)

Mémo · courriel/e-mail · article de blog · journal intime · lettre personnelle — informal/semi-formal register, first person.

Mass media (public register)

Article (de journal / d'opinion) · reportage · critique (de film/livre) · entretien/interview · script de podcast · publication sur les réseaux sociaux.

Academic / formal

Dissertation · rapport · proposition · discours formel — third person, formal connectors (toutefois, par conséquent, en conclusion).

HL Literary Works & Higher-Level Phrases

HL students study TWO literary works in French and must reference them in the IO.

Literary works (HL only)

Read at least two complete literary works originally written in French. Track theme, narrator, register, key extracts and one global issue you can discuss in the IO.

Exam Technique — Paper 1, Paper 2 & Individual Oral

Different components reward different skills — match yours to the task.

Paper 1 — Productive skills (Writing)

Choose ONE of three text-type tasks linked to the prescribed themes.

1 hour 15 minutes · 250–400 words · 1 of 3 tasks.

HL

1 hour 30 minutes · 450–600 words · 1 of 3 tasks.

Plan

Identify text type → audience → register → purpose → outline 3–4 paragraphs → include opinion + justification + at least one subjunctive.

Paper 2 — Listening + Reading

Two papers in one session.

Listening (SL ~45 min, HL 1 hour)

Three audio passages, multiple-choice and short-answer; you hear each twice.

Reading (1 hour both levels)

Three written texts, mixed task types; HL texts include literary extracts.

Read all questions BEFORE the audio. Watch for negatives, qualifiers and synonyms (paraphrase) — answers rarely use exact words from the audio.

Individual Oral (Internal Assessment)

Internally assessed, externally moderated.

SL

15 min prep + 12–15 min recording. Photo describing a prescribed theme + theme question (3–4 min description) + 4–5 min discussion + general conversation.

HL

20 min prep + 12–15 min recording. Extract from a literary work studied (3–4 min analysis) + 4–5 min discussion + general conversation on themes.

Always: describe → analyse → give opinion + justification → connect to a prescribed theme → use a range of tenses.
