I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in being your tutor. As a dedicated educator with over 20 years of experience that has ranged from teaching in a struggling U.S. public school to a top-tier private international school, I have built my career on creating highly engaging, inclusive, and student-centered learning environments. Holding a current Delaware Teaching License, I am confident I can immediately help you to achieve success. My educational philosophy is anchored in the frameworks of Understanding by Design (UbD) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). I believe in engineering curricula backward from clear learning objectives and with a strong emphasis on intentionally fostering transference of learning to real-life situations. Additionally, I consistently endeavor to remove barriers to learning so that every student can thrive in a rigorous academic environment. Most recently, during my 13-year tenure at The American School Foundation in Mexico City, I put these principles into practice with an incredibly diverse international student body. As the Math Department Chairman and Middle School Math Teacher, I vertically and horizontally aligned departmental standards and implemented a new problem-based curriculum. In the Upper School, I taught rigorous IB and AP courses. My data-driven approach to teaching IB Business Management resulted in 99% of my students scoring a 4 or higher over the last seven years, with over 90% achieving a score of 5 or higher. Prior to my international career, I spent nine years at Seaford Middle School in Delaware as a Special Education, Math, and Social Studies teacher. This foundational experience in one of the lowest-performing schools in the state allowed me to hone my skills in differentiation and instructional leadership. For four years, I represented my district as a School-Based Teacher Leader in a statewide math initiative for improving math instruction. Through this collaborative work and the creation of our school’s "Boost-Up" program, our eighth-grade students achieved the greatest improvement on the Delaware Student Testing Program (DSTP) math portion in the state of Delaware in 2006.
