IB Diploma Programme Physics Higher Level is a two-year group-4 science in the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The 2025 guide (first assessment May 2025) replaces the old core-plus-options model with five interconnected themes studied by all students: A – Space, time and motion; B – The particulate nature of matter; C – Wave behaviour; D – Fields; and E – Nuclear and quantum physics. HL covers every theme to greater depth than SL and adds five HL-only topics — A.4 Rigid body mechanics, A.5 Galilean and special relativity, B.4 Thermodynamics, D.4 Induction and E.2 Quantum physics — alongside a 40-hour practical programme (240 teaching hours in total). Assessment is two external examination papers plus an internally assessed scientific investigation, graded on the IB 1-7 scale.
