What an MNC is, and the positive impacts on host countries
An MNC produces in more than one country; for host countries it can bring jobs, FDI, technology transfer, tax revenue and cheaper goods.
A multinational corporation (MNC) is a business that operates, produces or provides services in more than one country — not just exporting to them, but establishing operations abroad through foreign direct investment (FDI). The country an MNC invests into is the host country; the country where it is headquartered is the home country.
Positive impacts on the host country:
- Jobs and employment — an MNC building factories, offices or stores directly creates jobs, cutting unemployment and raising incomes.
- FDI and investment — the MNC brings capital investment the host country might not raise itself, funding plant, equipment and expansion.
- Technology and skills transfer — the MNC brings modern technology, management techniques and training, raising the skills of local workers and the productivity of the wider economy.
- Tax revenue — profits, wages and sales generate tax for the host government (when the MNC does not avoid it).
- More consumer choice and lower prices — competition and scale from the MNC can widen choice and cut prices for local consumers.
- Infrastructure — MNCs (and the governments courting them) often improve roads, ports, power and telecoms.
- Links for local suppliers — the MNC's supply chain can create demand for local suppliers, spreading the benefit through the economy.
Why host governments compete for MNCs: these benefits are why many governments offer tax incentives, grants and special economic zones to attract FDI — the jobs, investment and technology transfer can accelerate development.
