What is a pathogen? (spec 1.4)
A pathogen is any organism or virus that causes disease.
A pathogen is an organism (or virus) that causes disease. The key idea Edexcel test is that pathogens are not a single biological group β they come from across the living world, plus the viruses:
| Type of pathogen | Named example | Disease it causes |
|---|---|---|
| Virus | HIV | AIDS |
| Virus | Influenza virus | Flu |
| Virus | Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) | Discolouring of tobacco leaves |
| Bacterium | Pneumococcus | Pneumonia |
| Protoctist | Plasmodium | Malaria |
| Fungus | (e.g. athlete's-foot fungus) | Athlete's foot |
Important balance. The same group can also contain harmless or useful species. For example, Lactobacillus bulgaricus (a bacterium) is used to make yoghurt and is not a pathogen. So "all bacteria cause disease" is wrong.
- Pathogen = organism or virus that causes disease.
- Pathogens may be fungi, bacteria, protoctists or viruses.
- Not every member of a group is a pathogen (e.g. Lactobacillus).
