Where bile is made and stored (spec 2.30)
Made in the liver, stored in the gall bladder, released into the small intestine.
Bile is a greenish-yellow liquid that helps with the digestion of food. You need to know exactly where it comes from:
- Bile is made (produced) in the liver.
- Bile is then stored in the gall bladder.
- When food enters the small intestine, bile is released down the bile duct into the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum).
So the journey is: liver β gall bladder β bile duct β small intestine (duodenum).
Exam tip. Two very common errors: writing that bile is made in the gall bladder (it is only stored there) and confusing bile with stomach acid. Keep them apart: the liver makes bile, the gall bladder stores it.
- Liver MAKES bile; gall bladder STORES bile.
- Bile travels down the bile duct into the small intestine (duodenum).
- Do not say bile is made in the gall bladder.
