What is evaluation?
Judge against requirements; don't just describe.
Evaluation = judging whether a solution meets its requirements and is fit for purpose, then recommending improvements.
Key difference — describe vs evaluate:
- DESCRIBE: 'The spreadsheet stores donor records and prints letters.'
- EVALUATE: 'It works for the basic task, HOWEVER it struggles with 6,000 records and lacks data integrity, THEREFORE a database would be more fit for purpose.'
Evaluation criteria:
- Functionality — does it do everything required?
- Usability — easy for intended users?
- Accuracy — correct results?
- Reliability — works without crashing?
- Efficiency — fast; good use of resources?
- Cost / time — within budget; on schedule?
- Scalability — copes with growth?
- Compliance — meets legal needs (GDPR)?
Always evaluate AGAINST the original requirements/success criteria. That is the meaning of 'fit for purpose'.
