Model answer
Leaves are the main photosynthetic organ of a plant. Their structure shows several clear adaptations.
1. Large, flat surface area (B1). Maximises the area of leaf exposed to light AND the area available for CO₂ absorption through stomata.
2. Thin (B1). Light penetrates to all photosynthetic cells; gases diffuse only a short distance from the air spaces to the chloroplasts.
3. Palisade mesophyll layer near the upper surface (B1). Column-shaped cells packed with chloroplasts sit right where most light reaches them. This is the major site of photosynthesis.
4. Spongy mesophyll with air spaces (B1). Loosely packed cells with large intercellular air spaces increase the surface area available for gas exchange (CO₂ in, O₂ out).
5. Stomata (mainly on the lower epidermis) (B1). Pores opened and closed by guard cells. Allow CO₂ to diffuse IN and O₂ to diffuse OUT. Position on the lower (shaded) surface reduces water loss.
6. Xylem and phloem in vascular bundles (B1, AVP). Xylem brings water from roots; phloem carries sugars away from the leaf.
7. Waxy cuticle on the upper epidermis (AVP). Waterproof, transparent — reduces water loss without blocking light.

Mark scheme: any 5 from the list above, B1 each, max 5. Each mark requires the FEATURE plus its FUNCTION — examiner reports note that 'palisade cells have lots of chloroplasts' alone scores half; you must add 'for absorbing more light energy / more photosynthesis'.
