What standard form is
Standard form writes any number as a number between 1 and 10 times a power of 10.
Some numbers are awkward to write out in full. The distance to the Sun is about km; the width of a human hair is about m. Counting all those zeros is slow and easy to get wrong.
Standard form is a tidy shorthand. Every number is written as where is at least 1 and less than 10, and is an integer.
So becomes , and becomes . The power of 10 carries all the size information, while holds just the meaningful digits.
The rule on is strict: is correct, but is not in standard form — is not less than 10. Getting into range is the key habit of this whole topic.
