Why we draw charts
A chart turns a list of numbers into a picture that reveals patterns instantly.
Imagine being handed a list of 60 numbers. Spotting the largest, the smallest or any pattern would take ages. Now imagine the same data drawn as a chart — you can see the story in seconds.
That is the whole point of data representation: a good chart makes data quick to understand and easy to compare.
Whatever chart you draw, three things must always be there:
- A title — what is this chart about?
- Labels on both axes — what does each direction show?
- A clear, even scale — equal steps for equal amounts.
Without these, even a beautiful chart is hard to trust — a reader cannot tell what they are looking at.
- Charts turn data into a picture so patterns are easy to see.
- Every chart needs a clear title.
- Both axes must be labelled.
- Scales must use equal steps for equal amounts.
