Parts of speech are the classes into which words are divided based on their function in a sentence. They are essential building blocks of grammar and language, consisting of eight types.
- Noun — a word that refers to a person, place, animal, thing, feeling, or idea.

Example: Robin went to buy groceries with his mother. Once they came home, he helped his mother bring them all in. - Adjective — a word that modifies a noun or pronoun, giving more detail.
Example: Elsa, the calm princess, wore a glass slipper and froze the beautiful kingdom. - Verb — a word that shows an action or a state.
Example: Lin plays tennis three times a week. - Adverb — a word that gives more information about a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Example: Today morning, Oliver and Rose walked somewhat slowly in a very beautiful garden. - Preposition — shows relationships in time, place, and positions, used before a noun or pronoun.
Example: I’ll see you at work on Tuesday. - Conjunction — connects words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.
Example: I wanted to go out but it started raining. - Interjection — short words or phrases that express sudden emotions.
