Reason 1 — rising life expectancy. People now live much longer, so more generations are alive at the same time, often four. This means grandparents are present for far more of a child's life and can take a more active, lasting role; this multi-generational structure is what Brannen calls the 'beanpole family' (more generations but fewer members in each).

Reason 2 — more mothers in paid work. As more mothers combine employment with raising children, families increasingly rely on grandparents to provide childcare. This benefits the family by giving trusted, often unpaid care, which is why grandparents have become a more central source of practical support in many households today.

The march of progress view argues that the position of children has steadily improved and that modern families are 'child-centred', valuing and protecting children as never before.

Strengths. It is supported by real, observable changes: child labour laws and compulsory education removed children from dangerous work and gave them a protected stage of life; child protection laws and the idea of children's rights guard their welfare; and smaller family sizes mean parents can invest more time, money and attention in each child. In material and legal terms, it is hard to deny that childhood is safer than in the past.

Limitations. Critics argue the view is too rosy. Child liberationists such as Firestone and Holt argue that the 'protection' of children is really control — children are denied freedoms and adult power dominates their time and space. The view also treats all children as the same, ignoring the inequalities between children created by class, gender and ethnicity, so the improvement is uneven. Finally, Palmer's idea of a 'toxic childhood' and Postman's 'disappearance of childhood' suggest childhood may in some ways be worsening or eroding.

Overall, the march of progress view usefully captures genuine improvements in children's welfare, but its assumption that childhood has simply got better for everyone is its key weakness — it underplays control, inequality and the downsides of modern childhood, so it is a partial view.

Ethnicity shapes the strength of extended-family ties and cultural expectations. These inequalities between children mean that any 'improvement' is uneven.

Critical and future-of-childhood views. Palmer's idea of a 'toxic childhood' argues that junk food, screen time, marketing and exam pressure are damaging children's wellbeing, so childhood may be worsening in important ways. Postman's 'disappearance of childhood' argues that television and the internet are eroding the boundary between childhood and adulthood, so the protected, separate childhood may even be fading.

Evaluation. The march of progress view is not wrong: it is genuinely difficult to argue that returning children to dangerous labour, or removing child protection, would be better. Even its critics implicitly accept that children need some care. However, the conflict and critical views are persuasive in showing that the picture is more complicated than a simple story of progress. The gains are real but unequally distributed, they involve a trade-off with freedom, and modern childhood brings new pressures the optimistic view ignores.

Conclusion. The position of children in the family HAS improved in material, legal and protective terms, so the view is partly correct. But the improvement is partial and uneven: it is shaped by class, gender and ethnicity, it can involve increased control, and modern childhood carries new risks. The most convincing judgement is therefore that children's position has improved for many children in important respects, but not equally for all and not without cost — a real but qualified improvement.
