The Presentation

The individual presentation is the centrepiece of Component 3: 30 of the 40 marks. You deliver it alone — up to about 10 minutes — presenting your perspective on the shared problem and your proposed solution.

It is marked on two objectives together:

• AO1 (Research, analysis & evaluation) — the substance: your researched perspective, evidence and evaluated solution.
• AO3 (Communication) — how well you communicate it: structure, clarity, visuals, audience awareness and delivery.

Because AO3 is weighted most heavily in Component 3, communication is not "presentation polish" on top of the real work — it is a large share of the marks. A brilliant analysis delivered in a confusing, monotone presentation loses the AO3 marks; clear, deliberate communication of solid research scores on both objectives.

Remember the golden rule: team presentations are not permitted. You present individually. The team gave you your perspective and solution; the presentation is entirely your own delivery of it.

The content you already have. From the previous subtopic you have your perspective, research/evidence, proposed solution and its evaluation. The presentation's job is to communicate that content effectively to an audience — selecting, structuring, illustrating and delivering it well.

Every effective presentation starts by knowing who you are talking to and why.

Audience. Assume a non-specialist audience — intelligent people who are not experts in your topic. This has practical consequences:

• Explain, don't assume. Define any technical terms; don't rely on specialist knowledge.
• Make it accessible. Use clear language, relatable examples, and visuals that aid understanding.
• Keep it engaging. A non-specialist audience needs to be drawn in, not lectured at.

Purpose. Be clear about what the presentation is for:

• to inform the audience about the problem from your perspective;
• to persuade them of your proposed solution (and its feasibility); and
• to do so honestly, acknowledging the solution's limitations.

Pitch everything to that audience and purpose. The right level of detail, the choice of evidence, the visuals and the tone all follow from asking: "What does this audience need, and what do I want them to take away?"

A clear central message. Decide the one thing you want the audience to understand and accept — usually your proposed solution and why it follows from your research. Every part of the presentation should serve that message. This focus is what makes a presentation feel purposeful rather than a loose collection of facts.

A strong presentation has a clear beginning, middle and end, and the audience always knows where they are.

Beginning (set it up).

• Introduce the problem (local, with global relevance) and your perspective on it.
• State your central message / purpose — where the presentation is going.
• Briefly signpost the structure so the audience can follow.

Middle (develop with evidence).

• Present your key points in a logical order, each supported by your research evidence.
• Build toward your proposed solution, showing how the evidence leads to it.
• Evaluate the solution — its feasibility and limitations — honestly.
• This is the AO1-rich core; it is also where visuals do most work.

End (conclude).

• Restate your central message and your solution.
• Leave the audience with a clear, memorable take-away.
• (Keep it concise — don't introduce new material.)

Signpost throughout. Use verbal signposts ("first…", "this leads to…", "to sum up…") so the audience always knows where they are. Clear structure and signposting are directly rewarded under AO3.

The main body is where you express and support your key points — and where visuals earn AO3 marks.

Expressing and supporting key points.

• Choose a small number of key points (two or three) rather than many shallow ones.
• Support each with your research evidence — refer to your sources and data, applied to the local problem.
• Show the reasoning: how the evidence leads to your point, and your points to your solution.
• Keep each point clear and self-contained, then link it to the next.

Using effective visuals. Visuals are part of the AO3 marks — but only when used well:

• Support, don't duplicate. A visual should aid understanding (a chart of your data, a diagram of your solution, an image of the local problem) — not just repeat your spoken words as text.
• Clear and uncluttered. One idea per visual; readable text; simple, relevant graphics. Avoid dense slides packed with paragraphs.
• Relevant. Every visual must serve a point — decorative slides waste attention.
• Integrated. Refer to your visuals as you speak ("as this chart shows…"), so they and your words work together.

Common visual types that work: a chart or graph of your key data; a simple diagram of your proposed solution; a photo that makes the local problem concrete; a short before/after or comparison visual.

The test of a good visual: if it were removed, would the audience understand less? If yes, it is doing its job. If the slide is just your script in bullet points, it is not.

Because you present individually, your personal delivery and performance are part of the assessment (AO3). Content that is well delivered communicates far better than content mumbled from notes.

What effective delivery looks like:

• Clarity — speak clearly, at a steady pace; don't rush to fit everything in.
• Engagement — eye contact, natural expression, and energy that holds attention.
• Not reading verbatim — talk to the audience from brief notes/cues, rather than reading a script or the slides word-for-word.
• Timing — stay within the ~10-minute limit; practise to fit, don't over-run.
• Confidence — a composed, prepared delivery signals command of your material.

Practise, out loud, more than once. Delivery is a skill that improves with rehearsal:

• rehearse to time, refining what to cut;
• practise transitions between points and to your visuals;
• ideally rehearse in front of someone (or record yourself) and get feedback on pace and clarity.

Handle nerves with preparation. The best antidote to nerves is knowing your material and having rehearsed the delivery. Because you own the research and solution (from the earlier subtopics), you can speak about them with genuine confidence.

Delivery amplifies substance — it doesn't replace it. Strong delivery earns AO3 marks and makes your AO1 research land; but delivery of thin content still scores poorly on AO1. Aim for solid substance and strong delivery — together they reach the top band.
